So long, Shakakan

I awoke this morning to Peter saying to the kids: "It looks like Shakakan died last night," and Kaia saying, "But I really like that little guy." Shakakan is/was our beta fish for a little over a year. We inherited him and his brother Alberto when a woman and daughter in our building moved and didn't think the fish would make the trip (although Kaia and Peter gave the fish their awesome names :). Alberto only survived a few days after the strenuous move to our place, but Shakakan has been going strong for a long time. Of course, pretty much since we got him people have thought he was dead because most of the time he just floated at the top of the water. But, thanks to Alberto, we know that dead fish don't float; they lay on the rocks on the bottom of the tank. That's how we found Shakakan this morning - laying on the rocks. Peter thought we would have a little ceremony and then flush him down the toilet - EWWWW!! And Kaia was not into that idea either, so we bagged Alberto up in old grocery bags and took him out with the trash. It was at this point that Kaia broke down in sobs saying she was really going to miss that little guy. However, she seems to have fully recovered when she found a forgotten bag of fruit snacks on the desk.
